CBM Summer Camp Experience

by admin last modified 2006-03-15 12:05 AM

CBM Summer Camp is the National Organization of Concerned Black Men’s (CBM) summer enrichment program. CBM Summer Camp offers children and youth an extended “summer camp” experience that includes the arts, science and sports for approximately eight weeks after the academic school year. Parents value the CBM Summer Camp because such an enriching summer learning program is generally out of reach for low-income families served by the project.

Goals

  • To offer an enriching summer learning program to children from disadvantaged communities
  • To engage children and youth in activities that will keep them out of trouble during the summer months
  • To provide a mentoring experience to children, and an opportunity to mentor for older youths, in a relaxed and nurturing environment
  • To offer a non-traditional learning experience during the summer that includes storytelling, interactive science experiments, dance and other activities that might not be offered in a regular classroom setting

These goals are achieved through:

  • An all day enrichment program for approximately eight weeks during the months of July and August
  • Mentoring by CBM staff and volunteers, parents and other youths
  • Instruction in the arts, science and sports to children and pre-teens
  • Enrichment and fun trips to broaden a child’s horizons
  • End-of-the-summer events in which the children and youth participate to demonstrate proficiency in the arts, science and sports
  • Peer leadership training for older youth that includes mentor and life skills education, conflict resolution, anger management and leadership development

CBM thanks the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation (CYITC) for its yearly funding of the CBM Summer Camp
